EarthTime User Guide

Installing

If you saved the ZIP file (preferable), go to an archiver program, like WinZip and OPEN the ZIP file. If you use Windows Explorer, you can usually just double click on the ZIP file in the list.

Below is a list of files which should be in the ZIP file, and a brief explanation:

Filename

Description.

earthtm.prc

The Palm application program

readme.txt

A text file with instructions

MakeCities.exe

A Windows 95/NT helper application (for building your own city databases)

cities.pdb

An pre-compiled database of well known cities

cities.txt

A sample city list text file, for use with MakeCities

Select all the files and extract all of them to somewhere on your hard desk. We recommend you create a directory called 'add-ons' under your 'c:\Palm' directory, and copy all 3rd party programs to there.

Run the Palm Install Tool (InstApp.exe program part of the Palm desktop software). There should be a 'Start' menu item created to launch this, called 'Palm Install Tool' or similar.

Once started select the 'earthtm.prc' file to install. Repeat the same procedure for the 'cities.pdb' files. When you have done this put your Palm in the cradle and hit the HotSync button. During the HotSync, the program and city database will be installed.

If something went wrong, start up the Palm Desktop software and select the 'HotSync/View Log...' menu. Have a look in here to see what went wrong. Usually it's 'insufficient memory', in which case you must delete something to make space.

Running the program

If it all worked OK, you should see an Icon for 'EarthTime' in the applications screen. Just tap on the icon to start the program.

Setting the 'home' timezone

The first thing you need to do is set which timezone is the 'home' timezone. The 'home' timezone is typically the one where you live. Technically, it is the timezone whose time matches your Palm's system time.

To do this tap on the 'Home' radio button (just above 'curr'). When the 'Home' radio button is highlighted the program is in a special mode to accept a new home timezone. Now tap on the map of the world, and select your home timezone.

When you have done this, tap the 'Curr' radio button, to put the program back in normal mode.

Daylight Savings

If your home timezone is in DST tap on the little Sun icon on the same row as the 'Home' radio button. When the icon is black, DST is OFF. When the icon is unfilled (white), DST is ON (ie. Summer time).

Querying times using the map

Make sure the mode is set to 'Curr', ie. the Home/Curr radio buttons should have 'Curr' filled black.

Simply tap on the map, or drag the pen around and you will see the timezone drawn on the map, and the time in that zone displayed to the right of the 'Curr' radio button. If the zone you are querying is in Summer time, ie. DST, tap on the little Sun icon on the same row as the 'Curr' radio button so that it becomes unfilled (white). Tapping the Sun icon toggles between ON and OFF.

Changing the city times

Simply tap on the names to popup a list of defined cities. Scroll the list up and down and then tap on the name desired. Again, you can tap the little Sun icons to toggle DST on/off for that city.

If you want to change the city database, you need to use the MakeCities utility on a Windows 95/NT PC. Please read the 'readme.txt' file on use of this utility.

What if? times

If you want to know what time it would be in one zone when it is, say 3pm, in another zone (like the home timezone) you can do this by using EarthTime's 'hypothetical mode'.

First, tap on the 'Other' radio button in the top-right corner of the screen. The program is now in 'hypothetical mode'. The program now switches over to a completely separate configuration. You can set the home timezone, like you did before. This doesn't change your real home setting, just the hypothetical one.

Tap on the 'Set' button (just under the map, to the right) to set the HOME timezone's hypothetical time (ie. the imaginary time). Once set, make sure the 'Curr' radio button is selected, and use the program just like when it's in normal mode. All the times displayed are what the times would be if the home time was as you set it.

Tap on the 'Now' radio button near the top-right to put the program back into the normal mode.

Registering

If you like this program you need to register to use it beyond the evaluation period. The easiest method is to register ONLINE. Your order will be processed usually within 24 hours, and you will be E-mailed a 'key' which you use to permanently unlock the program.

When you have your key, switch to the EarthTime application on your Palm and select the 'About...' menu item. Then tap the 'Register...' button on the dialog that pops up. Now there should be a dialog asking you to enter your key. Tap on the field if the cursor isn't flashing. Your key is made up of the following characters: '0'..'9' and 'a'..'f' So, '0' are zeroes (not O's) and '1's are ones (not L's).
