EarthTime FAQ

This comprises a number of frequently asked questions about EarthTime.

How do I set DST?

Tap on the Sun icons to toggle DST on/off for that city/zone. You can do this for the three cities, and you can do this for you HOME time zone and current (local) timezone.
NOTE: when setting DST on in your HOME timezone, make sure you go to the preferences application and change your system time to one hour forward. Likewise when turning DST off in your local zone, put your system time back an hour. This only has to be done for your HOME timezone.

Can I add my own cities to the list?

Yes. In the original ZIP file there is a 'cities.txt' file and 'MakeCities.exe' (a Win95 console application - sorry, no Mac version). Just edit the 'cities.txt' file using a text editor and then run the 'MakeCities' program. The program is invoked as follows:

    MakeCities cities

If successful, this will create a file called 'cities.pdb', which you must then install onto your Pilot using the standard InstApp program.

What is the format of the 'cities.txt' file?

It's pretty simple. The text file has a city definition per line, with three fields in each line separated by a single TAB character. The three fields are:

    city-name GMT-time-diff IDD-dialing-code

The GMT time difference is represented in HOURS +/- from GMT.

The MakeCities program comes up for a second then disappears!

You must first open a DOS window, then run the program from the command line.

Something is wrong with the city list, after running MakeCities.

This is most likely because the 'cities.txt' file has been formatted incorrectly. There must be single TAB characters separating the fields. Some text editors don't preserve TAB characters properly, using spaces instead.
